EK-S08 solid polysilazane can be used for SiCN, SiCNO and SiO2 ceramic materials, silicon nitride fiber, composite materials and related applications. It can be applied to steel surfaces operating at 500–1300 °C, where it provides decorative, protective, rust-preventing and anticorrosion functions, and it offers excellent corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, radiation resistance and high-temperature resistance. It is widely used in aerospace, photovoltaic cells, porous ceramics, high-temperature-resistant coatings, ceramic fibers, ceramic-matrix composites and other fields. The Si–N bond reacts readily with hydroxyl-containing substances, so the product can serve as an amine-type curing agent; it can also be used to modify hydroxyl-containing resins — such as phenolic, epoxy, alkyd and acrylic resins — to improve their temperature resistance and weatherability.

Service temperature. Maximum tolerated temperature is 1300 °C, with long-term service at 800 °C. Coatings compounded from it with temperature-resistant nano-fillers withstand direct flame or high-temperature gas-flow impingement. The temperature resistance of the coating varies correspondingly with the temperature capability of the particular substrate; the coating withstands hot-cold cycling and offers thermal-shock resistance (note: the product supplied differs according to the substrate).

Storage, packaging & transport

Store in accordance with national regulations. The storage environment must be dry, cool and well ventilated, away from heat and ignition sources. Packaging containers must be kept tightly closed and placed with care.The storage temperature must be maintained between 5 °C and 30 °C; the shelf life is 12 months.Opened, partially used coating must be resealed with the container lid and stored tightly closed.Mixed coating that has not been used up cannot be reclaimed; dispose of it in accordance with local regulations.Product past its shelf life may be used only after testing confirms that it still conforms to specification. Packaging: 1 kg and 5 kg vacuum packs.

Standard process: Surface cleaning → abrasive roughening → cleaning and blow-off → EK-S08 treatment → curing

  • Abrasive roughening. Before coating, grind or blast the substrate surface to remove rust, dust, dirt and other contaminants adhering to the workpiece. Surface roughening has a considerable effect on coating performance — Sa2.5 is optimal, and the minimum is St3 with no mill scale (GB/T 30790.4-2014) — so give it full attention.

  • Cleaning. Use a dedicated cleaning agent or degreaser to remove oil, dust and other residues remaining on the roughened surface.

  • Substrate drying. Before coating, ensure that the substrate surface is dry and clean.

  • Coating mixing. This product is one-component; take the required quantity and filter it through a 120-mesh screen before use.

  • Coating application. For laboratory spray application, a spray gun with a 1.0 nozzle orifice gives better appearance and uniformity. After curing, the coating is somewhat hydrophobic and oleophobic, so repeated recoating is not recommended.

  • Curing. After spraying, allow 10 minutes for the surface to dry, then cure at 260 °C, held at temperature for 60 minutes.

Note: This product is a one-component heat-curing product; once the container has been opened, use the coating within 24 hours. During longer breaks in application, application tools should be cleaned thoroughly to prevent them from setting solid. Completing the application in a single spray pass is recommended, with a dry film thickness not exceeding 15 µm; otherwise the film properties will be somewhat reduced.
